EQ basics

Emotional intelligence isn't one skill — it's five.

Before any training programme, it helps to know what's actually being built. Here are the five components we work with, plus a two-minute self-check to see where you stand today.

The five components

What we mean when we say "emotional intelligence"

These five areas show up in almost every programme we run, in different combinations depending on the group.

01

Self-awareness

Recognising your own emotions as they happen, and understanding how they're shaping your thinking and decisions in the moment.

02

Self-regulation

Managing impulses and reactions under pressure, so a strong emotion doesn't automatically become a rash decision or comment.

03

Motivation

Staying driven by internal standards and goals, especially when there's no immediate reward, deadline, or audience.

04

Empathy

Accurately reading what someone else is feeling, and genuinely understanding a perspective that isn't your own.

05

Social skills

Building relationships, communicating clearly, and navigating disagreement or group dynamics without damaging trust.

Basic self-assessment

Rate each statement from 1 (rarely) to 5 (almost always), honestly rather than aspirationally. This is a quick self-reflection tool, not a validated clinical assessment — think of it as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict.
